It is hopelessly vast, crushingly beautiful, dangerous. Its edges recede far beyond the reach of the eye, and its depths are inhabited by countless presences we will never encounter. It is still, yet always in motion. The sea may be a passage or a peril; it holds both peace and danger. It possesses immeasurable power, yet wishes neither good nor ill. The meaning and nature of the sea are the observer's alone to define. The works in the sculpture series speak of a fear of the sea and an equally profound love for it. The series is a study of an untamable giant, an attempt to control the uncontrollable. The saw has left its mark in pine, as the wind leaves its mark on water. The forms echo the movements of water—from silent trembling to surging force—and carry us safely from crest to the darkest of depths.
