Kanto series

Sea Change solo exhibition at Kalleria, Helsinki 21.-29.11.2025

Material Solid pine

The exhibition project has been supported by: Arts Promotion Center Finland & Asko Foundation

The series of works speaks of quiet changes, personal insights, and nature’s ability to restore us to true proportions, to our senses, and to the moment. Chainsaw carving is raw, precise, and intense. Each cut is an irreversible study of form, and the marks it leaves are an unembellished expression of honesty. Excess is cut away: what remains is the bare essential — revealed, brought to the surface, needing no further definition. The sculptures in the exhibition arise from insight at sea, a place where the surroundings invite us to pause, to listen, and to meet ourselves with honesty. The series of works seeks to offer a reflection of that moment when the gaze rests on the vastness of the sea, when the familiar structures and demands of human life and society have fallen away. The responsibilities, worries, and burdens that once felt as vast as the ocean begin to feel smaller, and so too does the self. In the same instant, the mind grows lighter. The tree-stump-like resting places in the exhibition support those who pause, simulating experience at sea: isn't this moment everything there is?
